Troubleshooting: why do some blocks unavailable on Windows?

Updated over 7 months ago

The issue

When using the Platforma Desktop App on Windows with its built-in backend, you may notice that some blocks are unavailable in the library, or they fail with an error during execution.

The root cause is that many of the specialized bioinformatics tools packaged within these blocks are developed for Linux and are not compatible with a native Windows environment. As a result, these blocks cannot be installed or executed

The solution: use Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)

The most effective way to resolve this is to run the Platforma backend within a Linux environment on your Windows machine. The Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) is a feature that allows you to do this seamlessly.

By setting up the backend on WSL, you can:

  • Ensure full compatibility with all Platforma blocks.

  • Continue to use the user-friendly Platforma Desktop App on Windows.

  • Run all computations in a powerful and stable Linux environment.

We have prepared a detailed guide to help you get set up.
